Although new to the Hunter's
Point neighborhood in Long Island City, Carolyn's Play House has been a popular
and successful day care center on the Upper West Side in Manhattan for five years.
Carolyn's Play House offers at least a 3-1 child to teacher ratio, usually augmented
with interns from local educational institutions and Carolyn's family. Her 14-year
old daughter is constantly popping in to play with her little "brothers and sisters"
and the children all love her and ask for her. Her husband, a former day care
teacher and music teacher, often peeks in to admire their work, make jokes, and
let them play on his various electric guitars. The children truly feel like part
of Carolyn's family and this is very comforting for very young children in their

not required (and unusual for a day care teacher), Carolyn Marx, the director
and head teacher, has two master's degrees (early childhood education and art).
She is also an exhibition-level artist, an art teacher, a former lead actor in
children's theater, and plays both piano and guitar. She sings all the time, making
up songs for every activity. Both a working mom and a stay-at-home mom, she is
sensitive to the scheduling needs of both. She carefully structures her curriculum
around the individual needs of her children, applying a warm, playful approach
to teaching cognitive, creative and socialization skills. Her assistant teachers
are warm, college-educated, friendly, playful, and experienced child care givers,
